Nestor Laverne Winkler, age 79, died Tuesday, January 4, 2022, at Southwest Medical Center in Liberal, Kansas. He was born on June 15, 1942, the son of Nestor C. and Aileen (Harris) Winkler. Nestor was also known as N.L. and Laverne, depending on how you knew him. He was a life-time farmer. At the age of 17, he took over the family farm after his father’s passing. A year later, in 1960, he graduated from Liberal High School. He married Gloria Dodds on November 11, 1960, in Liberal, Kansas. Together they raised three sons, Duane, Raymond, and Jerry, and two daughters, Brenda and Erika. Laverne raised cattle, horses, pigs, dairy goats, and chickens. He grew wheat and milo. He also had a custom hay harvesting business that operated throughout Seward and surrounding counties. His wife and children worked alongside him in all these endeavors. He enjoyed gardening, fishing, camping, and spending time with his family. Laverne instilled in his children a strong work ethic, love for the Lord, care for others, and respect and appreciation for the land and animals. His caring and gentle nature will long be remembered by all of his family. Laverne is survived by his wife, Gloria Winkler of Liberal, Kansas; three sons: Duane Winkler (Lisa), Raymond Winkler (Brenda), and Jerry Winkler; two daughters: Brenda Scull (Tim) and Erika Winkler. He is also survived by 14 grandchildren: Lauren Stuart, Aaron Winkler, Anthony Winkler, David Winkler, Monte Winkler, Sheldon Winkler, Coltin Winkler, Dalton Winkler, Jerrod Winkler, Allison Scull, Alissa Scull, Alexis Scull, Brock Marsala, and Kessie Marsala; five great grandsons; two great granddaughters; four siblings: Louise Biby, Robert Winkler, John Winkler, and Neta Cochran; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceded in death by both his parents, Nestor C. and Aileen Winkler, grandson, Joshua Winkler, sister-in-law, Kathy Winkler, brothers-in-law, Ray Cochran and Marvin Biby, daughter-in-law, Sherry Winkler Visitation will be from 2:00 PM – 5:00 PM on Sunday, January 9, 2022, at the New Beginnings Church, 2021 N. Western Avenue, Liberal, Kansas. Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM on Monday, January 10, 2022, at the New Beginnings Church, 2021 N. Western Avenue, Liberal, Kansas.
